COLLEGE BASEBALL: Ex-South Caldwell star helps Bears trounce Lightning

HICKORY – Brock Johnson led a 22-hit attack with three and drove in five runs on Saturday, sparking Lenoir-Rhyne University to a 23-3 home baseball victory over Goldey-Beacom.

The Bears improved to 8-2 overall as sophomore shortstop Corbin Watson hit a three-run home run.

Johnson, a red-shirt freshman second baseman from South Caldwell High, helped LRU take control early. The Bears scored five first-inning runs and were ahead 9-1 after three innings.

Middle reliever Connor Dailey, a senior, earned the pitching win for LRU.

Raul Perez-Duran had two RBIs and Jake Kinsell took the loss for the Lightning (0-1).

LRU junior first baseman Alex Reynolds drove in three runs for the second straight game, and the Bears’ hits and runs  were season highs.

The teams play a doubleheader at Bears Field on Sunday with a noon start time.
