COLLEGE BASEBALL: Bears sweep, will go for 11th victory on Tuesday

HICKORY – A doubleheader sweep of Goldey-Beacom on Sunday – wins of 5-3 and 4-0 sparked by strong pitching – left Lenoir-Rhyne University off to a 10-2 start.

Head coach Tom Fleenor’s Bears go for their 11th win on Tuesday at 4 p.m., facing Young Harris at home.

LRU started last season at 11-1 and finished 22-26.

LRU 5, Goldey-Beacom 3

Senior shortstop Tripp Hamrick delivered a game-winning, two-run double in the bottom of the fourth inning to break a 2-all tie.

Senior Matt Sullivan (Bristol, Va.) improved to 3-0 while senior Landon Whitson pitched a scoreless seventh inning for his third save of the season.

Goldey-Beacom’s Mitch Guerrieri (0-1) was tagged with the loss.

LRU 4, Goldey-Beacom 0

The Bears broke a scoreless tie by scoring all four of the game’s runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Highlighting the big inning were RBI singles from red-shirt freshman third baseman Will Jones and red-shirt freshman second baseman Brock Johnson.

LRU sophomore John Grigg improved to 3-0 after pitching six scoreless innings to go along with 10 strikeouts.

Isaiah Holmes took the loss for the Lightning (0-3).
