COLLEGE BASEBALL: Bears split, stay game above .500 in conference play

HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University won Sunday’s last game of a doubleheader with Tusculum to slip back above .500 in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) baseball.

After Tusculum won 7-5 at Bears Field in the first game, the Bears won 13-3 to earn a split and improve to 24-16 overall and 11-10 in the league.

Tusculum left 20-20 overall and 12-9 in the conference.

LRU has a home non-conference game next, facing Erskine at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in Hickory.

Tusculum 7, LRU 5

The Bears mad five errors, leading to five unearned runs, as Tusculum jumped to a 7-1 lead.

LRU red-shirt freshman Brock Johnson hit a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning and was part of a three-run ninth inning that came up just short.

The Bears outhit the Pioneers 11-8.

LRU junior Hunter Martin fell to 1-5 after taking a loss.

Tusculum’s Daulton Martin scored twice while Chase McAllister (3-1) earned a win.

Mitch McCain earned his fourth save of the year for the Pioneers.

LRU 13, Tusculum 3

LRU had a 10-0 advantage after four innings.

Junior outfielder Aaron Stamper hit a three-run home run – his team-leading seventh of the year – while Johnson and junior outfielder Justin Dean each added three hits and two RBIs.

Sophomore John Grigg improved to 7-1 after earning a win for the Bears.

Tusculum’s Seth DeHaven hit a three-run home run.

Zach Sanders fell to 3-4 after taking a loss for Tusculum.
