COLLEGE BASEBALL: Bears enter Saturday doubleheader under .500 in conference

HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University heads into Senior Day at Bears Field on Saturday under .500 in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) baseball.

Visiting Coker beat the Bears 13-7 on Friday night, leaving LRU at 12-13 in the league and 26-20 overall with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.

LRU will honor its seniors a half-hour before the first pitch.

Coker is 17-24, 6-19 heading into Saturday’s twinbill.

The Bears had a 2-0 lead on Friday before the Cobras wiped that out by scoring 10 of the next 12 runs in the game. Thomas Lopez and Charlie Burguieres led Coker with two hits and three RBIs each.

Junior designated hitter Caleb Beatty had three hits and three RBIs for LRU while red-shirt freshman second baseman Brock Johnson added three hits and scored twice and sophomore shortstop Corbin Watson added a solo home run.

The Bears issued 11 walks and six of the Cobras’ 13 runs were unearned.

LRU sophomore John Grigg fell to 8-2 after taking a loss while Coker’s Griffin Hollifield (4-3) earned a win.
