COLLEGE BASEBALL: Bears 2-1 over weekend, headed to Coker on Tuesday

Lenoir-Rhyne University won two of three games over the weekend in Americus, Ga., and returns to action Tuesday with a non-conference baseball game at Coker with a 3 p.m. start.

The Bears won 6-4 on Sunday over Georgia Southwestern on the road after falling 7-2 in a game on Saturday and winning the nightcap 9-4.

LRU is 14-17 overall and Georgia Southwestern fell to 11-19

LRU 6, Georgia Southwestern 4 (Sunday)

Clayton Jeffries went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs to lead the Bears to a victory.

Matthew Freeman had two hits and Caleb Beatty drove in two runs for LRU.

Relievers Matt Ranson and Hunter Martin combined for seven innings after starter Jake Conroy exited, and they gave four hits, on runs and struck out seven. Martin picked up his first win.

Matthew Mamatas and Hunter Foster each had two hits for the Canes and Tyler Skelton had two RBIs and Bo Halcomb had one.

The win gave LRU a 9-7 record on the road this season.

LRU 9, Georgia Southwestern 4 (Saturday)

The Bears scored nine runs on nine hits, led by a 3-for-6 game by Will Jones and Grant Fuller’s two hits.

Paul Hall picked up his fourth win of the year as the Bears’ starter. He pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing two hits, two earned runs, walking four and striking out nine. Reliever Nick Flachosfky gave up no runs or hits over the final 1 2/3 innings.

Hall has struck out at least nine in three straight outings.

Georgia Southwestern 7, LRU 2 (Saturday)

The Bears were held to four hits – three by Jeffries and the other by Fuller – in an opening game loss.

LRU scored a run in the fifth inning and in the sixth inning.

The Bears struck out seven times and left four on base and the Canes had seven strikeouts and left nine stranded.

LRU starter Alex Shirazi went 5 2/3 innings, taking a loss after allowing seven earned runs. He struck out three. Kevin LaRosa pitched the final 3 1/3 innings for the Bears.

Georgia Southwestern’s Tucker Smith threw a complete game to gain his seventh win of the season. He gave up two runs on four hits and struck out seven.

The Canes had 15 hits, six combined by their first two batters in the lineup. Those two batters also scored three runs and drove in three.
