INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A Lenoir-Rhyne University women’s track and field star is among 30 student-athletes still under consideration to win the NCAA’s Woman of the Year Award.

SALAMON

Haylea Salamon, who graduated in May, is on the list of finalist for the award, a press release from LRU said. She is one of 581 original nominees.

She will be honored by the NCAA on Oct. 28 in Indianapolis.

“I was honored to be nominated by Lenoir-Rhyne,” Salamon said in the press release. “I was amazed to be chosen by the SAC (South Atlantic Conference) but to be a NCAA Top 30 finalist is unbelievable.

“I could not be more excited to go to Indianapolis and have the chance to meet all the incredible women nominated.”

Salamon, a native of Saskatchewan, Canada, left LRU with a degree in Health and Exercise Science and with a grade point average of 3.95. She was twice selected as an All-American for academics, was the top graduate for the College of Health Sciences at LRU and was also Student Government Associate President’s Award winner.

She was the SAC Female Field Athlete of the Year in 2015 and 2016, winning outdoor track and field championships in the discus and having top 10 finishes for four years in the shot put, javelin and hammer throw.

Salamon earned U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region honors for the shot put and discus in both indoor and outdoor track and field five times.

The NCAA Woman of the Year award, established in 1991, honors graduating female college athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.

The selection committee will announce the nine finalists, including three women from each NCAA division, in early October. From those finalists, the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics will select the 2018 NCAA Woman of the Year.
