WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Unbeaten Lenoir-Rhyne shuts out Mount Olive

HICKORY – Abigael McGarel scored twice on Wednesday night, leading Lenoir-Rhyne University’s women past visiting Mount Olive 3-0 in soccer.

McGarel, a sophomore from Morristown, Tenn., scored the only goal the Bears (3-0, ranked No. 21 in NCAA Division II) would need just 15 minutes, 24 seconds in.

The match was played in wet field conditions.

McGarel, a midfielder, scored the first goal by finishing a corner kick from junior midfielder Abbie Brown.

LRU went up 2-0 on a penalty kick by McGarel in the 49th minute.

Sophomore midfielder Aqsa Mushtaq provided the final goal at the 67:41 mark with a header into the back of the net.

The Bears had a 33-1 edge in shots taken en route to now having outscored opponents this season 10-0.

Senior goalkeeper Alayna Morris was in goal for LRU while Abigail Ross made nine saves in goal for Mount Olive.

The Bears’ next match is on the road on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Belmont Abbey.
