WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Lenoir-Rhyne ties ninth-ranked Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Lenoir-Rhyne University battled ninth-ranked Carson-Newman to a 2-2 double overtime tie in women’s soccer on Wednesday night.

Abbie Brown and Rachel Fischer scored goals for the Bears (3-2-1, 0-0-1), who were playing their first South Atlantic Conference match of the season.

Fisher, a freshman defender, forced overtime with her goal at the 86:36 mark of the second half. It was her first goal of the season, coming on a header off a corner kick by Aqsa Mushtaq.

The Bears were able to hold on for a tie despite allowing an on goal.

Brown, a junior, opened the scoring just 5:57 into the match with her second goal of the season.

Holly Talbut-Smith of Carson-Newman (5-0-1, 2-0-1) scored 21 seconds after Brown’s goal.

The shots were even at 11 each and goalkeepers Alaya Morris of LRU and Jacqueline Burns stopped five and seven shots, respectively.

LRU’s next match is Saturday at 1 p.m. at Lincoln Memorial.
