ROCK HILL, S.C. – Four Lenoir-Rhyne University men’s soccer players earned preseason honors, and the Bears were projected to finish second this season in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC).
In a vote of conference head coaches released on Monday by the SAC, Wingate got nine of 11 first-place votes to emerge as the favorite to win the league title. The other first-place votes, one each, went to LRU and Lincoln Memorial.
The Bears selected first-team preseason All-SAC were senior forward Ignacio de Goya of Madrid, Spain; sophomore midfielder Victor Cascon of Salamanca, Spain; senior midfielder Florian Simon of Oberotterbach, Germany; and senior defender Emil Tansinda of Sale, England.
de Goya had 12 goals a year ago and was named the SAC’s Player of the Year.
LRU went 10-4-3 last season and earned an NCAA Division II postseason bid. The Bears were 6-2-2 in the league, beating Wingate once, and tied for second place.
