COLLEGE X-C, TRACK & FIELD: Bears establish Lou Peyton scholarship

HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University has established The Lou Peyton Track and Field Scholarship in honor of the exemplary leadership and dedication of a renowned distance runner.

The purpose of scholarship is to provide tuition assistance for deserving student-athletes in cross country and track and field, the school said in a press release.

Funds for the scholarship will the Full Moon 25K and 50K Ultra Races in Perryville, Ark.

The first preference of scholarship recipients will be given to a qualified student-athlete from the Arkansas but other candidates could be awarded.

Candidates for the scholarship in addition to athletic ability will embody a commitment to academic excellence, high character, and exemplary citizenship.

LRU’s men’s and women’s cross country teams are by Danny Williamson, who is in his first season at LRU after a nearly three-decade stint as head coach at Western Carolina.

“I feel it is an honor to have an association with a name like Lou Peyton and having her offer support to our men’s and women’s track Programs here at Lenoir-Rhyne,” Williamson said in the press release. “As we move forward with our established goals for the program, the support that the Lou Peyton Scholarship provides will help us reach these goals at a faster pace than anticipated, and it will be an honor for a young man or young woman to be the distinguished recipient of this yearly award based upon the history of what Lou Peyton means to the running world.”
