COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Lenoir-Rhyne off to 4-0 start, best since 2009

Lenoir-Rhyne University is off to a 4-0 start in women’s volleyball after winning twice on Saturday in Pembroke.

The Bears defeated Shaw University 25-21, 25-23 25-16 and Fayetteville State 25-13, 25-8, 25-14 at UNC Pembroke for their best season start since 2009.

LRU started 10-0 in 2009.

The Bears play their first South Atlantic Conference (SAC) match on Tuesday at home, facing Newberry (S.C.) at 7 p.m.

LRU 3, Shaw 0

The Bears got 11 kills by Angelica Arroyo and six kills by Madison Asher in their first match on Saturday.

LRU freshman Helen Hamilton had 26 assists and 12 digs and Hannah Houston finished with three aces.

Shaw was led by Karla Sosa’s nine kills.

LRU 3, Fayetteville State 0

The Bears had a .300 hitting percentage to Fayetteville State’s .048 as they won their second match on Saturday.

Sophomore Taylor Walton had an LRU-best 10 kills and 11 Bears had at least one kill.

The 4-0 start to the season matches the best start since winning 10 straight in 2009.

LRU 3, Lees-McRae 0 (Friday)

The Bears won 25-21, 25-22, 25-23 behind sophomore Taylor Prall’s 16 kills with freshman Alannah Thomas providing 12 kills and 11 digs.

Hamilton dished out 33 assists and freshman Ashley Hawkins had a team-high 15 digs.

LRU 3, UNC Pembroke 2 (Friday)

LRU beat the tournament host 23-25, 25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 15-3 when Arroyo had 18 kills, while recording a .571 hitting percentage.

Hamilton dished out 59 assists in a five-set marathon and Jaclyn Denny posted 10 kills and 11 blocks.
