COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Bears beat UNC Pembroke, off to 6-0 start

FLORENCE, S.C. – Freshman Ashley Hawkins had 21 digs on Friday as Lenoir-Rhyne University ran its volleyball win streak to six matches by beating UNC Pembroke for the second time this season.

Hawkins, who played high school volleyball at North Iredell, led the Bears to 69 digs in four sets as they won 25-17, 14-25, 25-16, 25-21 at the Smith University Center.

LRU (6-0) meets Mount Olive and host Francis Marion on Saturday in the same tournament.

The Bears beat UNC Pembroke 3-2 earlier this season.

Taylor Prall had a team-high 14 kills for the Bears in Friday’s match and junior Jaclyn Denny added a season-best 11 kills.

The six-match win streak is LRU’s longest since an eight-match streak in 2015, and the Bears started 10-0 in 2009.
