COLLEGE TENNIS: Former South Carolina player joins Lenoir-Rhyne staff

HICKORY – The captain of last season’s women’s tennis team at South Carolina is joining the tennis coaching staff at Lenoir-Rhyne University.

Brigit Folland, who lettered four times while playing for the Gamecocks, will be a graduate assistant for the Bears, LRU men’s and women’s tennis head coach Tom Rees announced Tuesday via a press release.

She’s a native of Bristol, England and started for four years at South Carolina, leading the Gamecocks to the NCAA Division I women’s Sweet 16 last spring. Her college record was 91-51 in singles and 81-37 in doubles.

Folland was the top-ranked junior player in the United Kingdom and has a career-high ranking of 1,000 in the WTA Doubles.

“I am ecstatic to welcome Brigit as our incoming graduate assistant this year,” Rees said in the press release. “She brings an incredible playing pedigree and it was clear to us from the outset of the search process that she was a perfect fit for the job. Our players will undoubtedly benefit from her experience in our pursuit to reach the next level.”

LRU’s tennis teams open the fall season on Sept. 9 at the Wingate Invitational, a two-day event.
