COLLEGE SWIMMING: Lenoir-Rhyne stars sweep league’s weekly awards

HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University swimmers swept the Bluegrass Mountain Conference (BMC) weekly awards, officials from the conference announced on Monday.

LRU’s Alyx Koert won the women’s award for the second time this season while Noah McRea won the men’s award.

Koert, a junior from Naples, Fla., won 500-yard freestyle (5:30) and 1,000-yard freestyle (11:06) events and was part of LRU’s first-place 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:54.96) last Saturday in a home dual meet on Senior Day against Catawba.

She holds six school individual records (500-yard, 1,000-yard and 1,650-yard freestyle and the 50-yard, 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke events).

McRea, a senior from Hickory, won three events last Saturday – the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.31), the 200-yard backstroke (1:58.87) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:58.54) – in the Bears’ 173-86 victory over Catawba.

McRea was also part of the Bears’ first-place 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:18.02) in the Indians’ meet and has qualified with a ‘B’ cut time to nationals in the 400-yard individual medley (a school-record 3:57.84). He currently holds four other individual school records — the 200-yard freestyle and the 50-yard, 100-yard and the 200-yard backstroke.

LRU’s teams next compete in the BGMC championships on Feb. 14-17 at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in Charlotte.
