HICKORY – The Lenoir-Rhyne University men and women split a home swimming dual meet on Saturday with Catawba.
The Bears beat the Indians 173-86 in the men’s event at the Shuford Physical Education Center and Catawba’s women downed LRU 151-107.
Noah McRea, a senior, and Jacob Queen, a sophomore, each won three events to spark the Bears’ men.
McRea won the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.31), 200-yard backstroke (1:58.57) and 500-yard freestyle (4:58.34) while Queen placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.94), 200-yard breaststroke (2:10.23) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:57.68). Both swimmers were part of LR’s first-
place 400-yard freestyle relay squad (3:18.02).
In the women’s meet, LRU was led by junior Alyx Koert, who won the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:06.48) and 500-yard freestyle (5:30.00). Koert was also the fourth leg in the Bears’ first-place 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:54.96).
Bears freshman Lauren Rutherford, who was also part of the 400-yard freestyle relay squad, placed first in the women’s 50-yard freestyle (25.93).
LRU’s swim teams next compete in the Bluegrass Mountain Conference championships on Feb. 14-17 at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center in Charlotte.
