HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University pitcher Thomas St. Clair, drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals, has been selected second-team all-state by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA).
The first and second teams were released on Monday.
St. Clair, who played high school baseball at Mount Tabor High near Winston-Salem, was drafted in the 24th round by the Cardinals (724th) pick. He is the seventh player in LRU history to be drafted by major league baseball team.
Last season, St. Clair finished 10-4 for the Bears with an ERA of 2.28 and a school-record 116 strikeouts. He was named the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Pitcher of the Year.
St. Clair set a single-game record for strikeouts for LRU with 17 in a 3-0 win over Anderson, S.C., on the road on Feb. 24.
He was named SAC Pitcher of the Week four times this season and won the region award twice and was the top pitcher once at the NCAA Division II level as selected by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
St. Clair finished with 284 career strikeouts, three shy of tying the record at LRU.
