STATE TRACK AND FIELD: Howlett-led Lake Norman Charter girls win 2A championship

GREENSBORO – Led by first-place finishes in the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter by Mariah Howlett on Saturday, Lake Norman Charter High’s girls won a state 2A track and field championship at North Carolina A&T.

Howlett won the 1,600 in just a bit more than five minutes (5:00.67) and won the 3,200 in 10:57.13 to lead the Knights to 69 points, eight ahead of second-place Burlington Cummings.

Lake Norman Charter’s Izzy Evely finished second behind Howlett in the 1,600 (5:12.04) and 3,200 (11:14.78), and the Knights’ 400-meter relay team also won a state title.

North Lincoln’s 3,200-meter relay team won a state title (9:48.27) as it finished fourth in the team standings with 35 points.

Lincolnton’s Kayla Smith was second in the 100 in 12.36 and in the 200 in 25.72.

The top four finishers in the 1,600 were from area leagues, as Angie Allen of North Lincoln and Caroline Hilliard of Bunker Hill finished third and fourth, respectively, behind Howlett and Evely.

Forest Hills’ boys won the state 2A boys title with 57 points, finishing ahead of Croatan (63), with North Lincoln fourth (26) and Hibriten eighth (22).

Bernie Briley of West Iredell took second in the 100 (11.03) and fourth in the 200 (22.23) while Hibriten’s top performances were a second in the 300-meter hurdles by Miles Simon (39.68) and a second by its 800-meter relay team.

Alex Reavis of Bandys was second in the high jump (6-6) behind Landon Parker of Mount Pleasant (6-8).

Bandys’ Ja’Tay Culliver ran an 11.10 to finish fourth in the 100. He was seventh in the 200 at 22.63.

Panther Creek had 69 points, edging Southeast Raleigh by five, for the girls’ 4A title.

The Green Hope boys had 55 points and finished ahead of Cary (44) to gain a 4A title.

No Northwestern 3A-4A participants finished in the top two of an event.

1A, 3A championships

The 1A and 3A championships, also at Irwin Belk Track at North Carolina A&T, are Sunday. They were originally scheduled for Friday but moved because of rainy weather.
