ST. LOUIS — In what had to be one of his most satisfying nights in the major leagues, Hunter Harvey shined again for the Washington Nationals.

The Nationals, using three pitchers, limited the St. Louis Cardinals to three hits in a 6-0 victory before a crowd of 45, 779.

Harvey, a former Bandys High star, threw the sixth inning. He gave up no hits, struck out no one and walked no one.

He came on in relief of Anibol Sanchez and Mason Thompson closed for Washington, gaining his first save.

The second game of the series is Tuesday night in St. Louis.

Harvey faced three batters on Monday night, throwing six of his 10 pitches for strikes. He is 1-0 with a 2.67 ERA in 28 games this season with 32 strikeouts and 27 innings.

After 54 big league games, he is 2-2 with an ERA of 3.20 with 55 strikeouts in 50 2/3 innings.

Harvey was a first-round draft pick in 2013, going No. 22 by the Baltimore Orioles. He ended up with Washington, off waivers, after the San Francisco Giants waived him just before breaking spring training in Arizona.

He is the son of right-hand reliever Bryan Harvey, an all-star once in each league. The elder Harvey rose to stardom as undrafted player and played just shy of 10 years in the big leagues.
