WASHINGTON, D.C. — Hunter Harvey gained his first victory of the season and fourth of his career on Tuesday night when Washington nipped the visiting Chicago Cubs 4-1.
The fourth of five pitchers used by the Nationals (11-18), Harvey worked 1 1/3 innings. He gave up one hit, walked one and struck out one as a crowd of 12, 504 watched.
He threw strikes on 11 of 21 pitches, facing six batters in 53-degree weather.
Washington’s series with the Cubs continues Wednesday night and closes with a day game (1:05 p.m.) on Thursday. The Nats then play Friday through Sunday at Arizona.
Harvey, a former star at Bandys High, is 1-0 with an ERA of 2.13 after 12 games this year with 12 2/3 innings pitched and 14 strikeouts.
After 76 big league appearances he is 4-3 with an ERA of 2.74, striking out 82 in 75 2/3 innings.
He has been especially effective of late — in his last 15 games, he is 1-0 with an ERA of 2.13, allowing six hits and walked six and striking out 14.
