NEWTON – Newton-Conover High’s volleyball is the third in the South Fork 2A to be sidelined by COVID-19 this season, effective immediately.
The Red Devils follow Maiden and Bandys in having to stop playing to deal with a pandemic.
Newton-Conover will go under quarantine, as Bandys did, and Maiden’s athletic department stopped play as a precaution, it said.
Maiden sidelined its team on Nov. 23 and Bandys sidelined on Nov. 25, and the matches missed have been rescheduled.
In the announcement about Newton-Conover — received from South Fork 2A administrator Butch Parker — he said the league will look at rescheduling once it has the exact quarantine dates for the Red Devils.
Parker’s e-mail said Newton-Conover will not play for the next two weeks.
On Tuesday morning, Newton-Conover athletic director John Echerd said the Red Devils are under quarantine until Dec. 14 and no other sports teams at Newton-Conover are impacted by the volleyball decision.
The Red Devils will miss these volleyball matches in that time frame – Tuesday at East Lincoln and Thursday versus Lincolnton.
Newton-Conover plays Maiden on Dec. 17, Dec. 18 versus West Lincoln and Dec. 21 at Lake Norman Charter.
The South Fork 2A is playing a 14-game home and away schedule that is scheduled to end on Jan. 5 (but North Lincoln at Lincolnton is already set for Jan. 6).
Here’s the current South Fork 2A season and schedule with changes to come:
