TRACK AND FIELD: Burke County has 4 state champs; Bandys boys finish third in 2A

GREENSBORO –The Greater Hickory area produced six state champions on Friday in 2A and 3A title meets in track and field. including two from Patton in a 2A meet where Bandys’ boys finished third.

Madison Clay of Patton won a state 2A title in the girls’ 3,200 in a time of 11 minutes, 26.42 seconds while the Panthers’ Vance Jones won the 800 in 1:55.76 and was on Patton’s winning 3,200 boys’ relay team (8:11.54).

A fourth Burke County state champion was East Burke’s Kenneth Byrd, who won the pole vault. He added a second in the high jump and sixth in the 110 hurdles.

Bandys — sparked by finishes of second in the shot put and fifth in the discus by Austin Cline — scored 32 points to finish behind Burlington Cummings (76) and Eastern Wayne (43) in 2A boys. Patton was 10th with 23 points.

Grant Parham of Bandys was second in the boys’ 2A 1,600 and eighth in the 3,200.

The Bandys girls tied Brevard with 22 points for 10th place in the girls’ 2A standings, where North Lincoln was fourth and West Henderson was the team champion.

Other area state champions from area leagues were: Emily Hartsoe of Ashe County won the shot put and discus in 3A girls, North Lincoln’s boys won 3A boys’ 400 relay, and West Iredell’s Alaya Gillespie won the 100.

Gillespie and Pagie Oldenberg of Bandys placed three times with Gillespie second in the 3A 200 and third in the 400, with Oldenberg second in the 2A girls’ 1,600, third in the 3,200 and anchoring the 3,200 relay team.

Maiden’s Callie Stamey placed third in the 300 hurdles and sixth in the 100 hurdles in 2A.

Bunker Hill had a 3-4 finish in the 2A pole vault, Olivia Ellis and Tyra Mitchell, respectively.

In 2A boys, Spencer Goins of East Burke was fourth in the 100 and tied for seventh in the 200 as the Cavs finished sixth in the team chase.

Liam Sutton led North Lincoln’s boys in 3A with a second in the 110 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles. The Knights tied Cramer and Lake Norman Charter for sixth.

R-S Central’s girls won the 2A meet and Greensboro Dudley won the 3A boys’ title.
