CARY — Newton-Conover High’s Ross Dant highlighted finishes by local swimmers over the weekend as he repeated as the state’s best in the 500-meter freestyle in the state 1A-2A meet.
Dant set a classification and state record — finishing in a time of four minutes, 18.70 seconds — and added a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke in 49.16.
Among girls, Nina Turcanu of St. Stephens had a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle in the 3A championships (5:02.98).
Fred T. Foard’s Ethan McCosch finished third twice, in the 500 freestyle (4:43.24) and in the 100 butterfly (50.83) in the 1A-2A meet.
Paul Karre of Newton-Conover delivered two top 10 finishes in 1A-2A boys, taking fourth in the 500 freestyle (4:45.69) and seventh in the 200 freestyle (1:47.06).
The girls’ state team titles were won by Carrboro in 1A-2A, Charlotte Catholic in 3A and Raleigh Leesville Road in 4A.
Boys’ state team championships were won by North Carolina Science and Math in 1A-2A, Marvin Ridge in 3A and Green Hope in 4A.
