STATE 3A SWIMMING: Hickory’s Durak wins 500 freestyle championship

CARY – Hickory High’s Anna Durak won a state title in the 500 freestyle and was second in the 200 freestyle on Thursday at the 3A championships in Cary.

Durak, who has signed to swim in college at Princeton, won the 500 in a time of four minutes, 52.87 seconds. Her time of 1:49.81 in the 200 earned her second place.

Hickory finished 17th in the team standings with 37 points with St. Stephens taking 19th with 29 points and Freedom was 40th with four points.

Charlotte Catholic scored 298 points to win the girls’ title.

In the boys’ 3A meet, Marvin Ridge won a title with 246 points with St Stephens scoring 47 points to place 16th.

Nina Turcanu led the Indians’ girls with a fifth in the 200 freestyle (1:55.22) and a fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:06.99).

Matthew Burgess sparked St. Stephens’ boys with an eighth-place finish in the 500 freestyle (4:521.04) and he completed a leg of the 400 freestyle, where the Indians were seventh in 3:20.90.

The other members of the Indians’ 400 freestyle team were Stephan Procopii, Joshua Talbert and Brady Leatherman.
