SPRING SPORTS ROUNDUP: Alex Central scores 3 in seventh inning, gains first baseball win

Alexander Central High scored three runs in the seventh inning on Thursday to nip West Forsyth 5-3 in Clemmons and win for the first time this baseball season.

The Cougars (1-1) had a one-run lead until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Titans scored twice to go in front 3-2.

Alexander Central finished with eight hits, two by Dalton Stikeleather, and Byron Younts homered and drove in two runs.

The Cougars did not have an error and West Forsyth, limited to four hits, made two.

Brendan Cuthrell led the Titans with two hits.

Maddox Kerley, the third pitcher used by the Cougars, got a win after going 1 2/3 innings. He gave up two hits, walked four and struck out two before Jem Lowrance pitched a scoreless inning to gain his first save.

Reliever Caden Perry, going 1 2/3 innings and giving up two hits and three runs (all earned), took the loss for West Forsyth (1-1).

Alexander Central’s next game is Saturday at 2 p.m. at Davie County.

Lake Norman Charter 9, Mountain Island Charter 3

The Knights’ six-run second inning wiped out visiting Mountain Island Charter’s three-run lead.

Jake Monti had two hits and drove in two runs for Lake Norman Charter while winning pitcher Peter Alperi added two hits and one RBI.

Alperi threw four innings, allowing four hits and three runs (one earned).

The Knights (2-0) start their South Fork 2A schedule on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at home, facing Bandys.

Hibriten 12, Ashe County 5

The Panthers evened their record at 1-1 with a home victory.

South Caldwell beat Hibriten 10-0 in a season-opener on Wednesday with Ethan Watson taking the loss for the Panthers.

Trent Black pitched five innings and struck out 11 for South Caldwell and Hunter Ingle hit a home run.

Hibriten goes to West Caldwell on Saturday for a 2 p.m. game.

Postponements

South Caldwell’s game at Draughn was rained out and reset for Saturday at 2 p.m.

Games postponed with no new dates set were West Caldwell at Bandys, Burns at East Burke and Newton-Conover at St. Stephens.

SOFTBALL

Pine Lake Prep 4, Lake Norman Charter 2

Visiting Pine Lake Prep broke a 2-all tie with two runs in the top of the fifth inning to win.

No other game details were available.

Postponements

St. Stephens’ game at Bandys and West Lincoln’s game at Fred T. Foard were postponed by rain with no new dates set.

Alexander Central’s game scheduled at Bunker Hill was moved to April 25.

GIRLS SOCCER

Alexander Central 1, Bandys 0

The Cougars won in Catawba, dropping the Trojans to 0-1-1.

Alexander Central is at Draughn at 6 p.m. on Friday while Bandys goes to Fred T. Foard on Monday for a 6:30 p.m. match.

Draughn 2, Freedom 2, tie

Haley Lowman had one goal and one assist for Draughn, which tied Freedom in a match at the Catawba River Soccer Complex.

Draughn is at home Friday at 6 p.m., facing Alexander Central, and Freedom has a home match at 6 p.m. against Patton.
