HIGH SCHOOL SPRINGS SPORTS: 9 baseball conference openers moved to Wednesday

HobbsDailyReport.com

Nine high school baseball games — all of them conference openers — were postponed by rain on Tuesday and rescheduled for Wednesday.

Rain wiped out almost all of Tuesday’s scheduled action across the board, from baseball to softball to girls soccer to boys tennis, golf and girls’ and boys’ lacrosse.

For a complete list of postponements, see an earlier post, and an updated version of the high school schedule for Wednesday through Saturday is also posted.

Watauga protest denied

Watauga’s protest of a 7-3 home baseball loss against Freedom on Monday night in Boone was not upheld on Tuesday.

Freedom scored four runs in the sixth inning to wipe out a 3-2 lead by Watauga. That’s when Watauga head coach Seth Freeman indicated the Pioneers would play the rest of the way under a protest.

Radio station WATA in Boone reported Watauga led 3-2 with one out in the sixth inning with Dillon Shelton at the plate with a 1-2 count. Reliever Alex Dye was then called for a balk, scoring the tying run, and Freedom went on to gain a 5-3 edge.

Freeman’s protest apparently was on the basis of the balk call, and calls of that nature are generally not accepted for review by umpire booking agents because they are calls made on an umpire’s judgment.

GIRLS SOCCER

St. Stephens 4, Davie County 1

The Indians won a non-league match in the Wilkes County Cup, getting two goals by Natalia Alverez and one each from Emily Janickie and Makayla Stanford.

Janickie, Brayden Roberts and Sarah Atwood each provided an assist for the Indians, and Mackenzie Stafford had three saves in goal.

St. Stephens plays West Iredell in the same tournament at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

LATE TUESDAY

SOFTBALL

Freedom 8, Watauga 0

The Patriots won a Northwestern 3A-4A opener in Boone with Morgan Maynor driving in three runs and Myra Twitty and Ellie Tanner each driving in two.

Freedom scored two runs in the third inning and three in the fifth and six innings to overcome making five errors.

Tanner was the winning pitcher, throwing a complete game two-hitter. She walked none and struck out 11.

GIRLS SOCCER

Lake Norman Charter 4, Community School of Davidson 1

Lake Norman Charter won its season-opening match at home, winning in their debut under head coach David Crutchfield.

The Knights took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by sophomore Ayden Yates before CSD tied it on a breakaway goal by Darby Bevis.

Lake Norman Charter led 2-1 at the half and Yates then scored her third goal and Alex Behnke later scored on a penalty kick for a three-goal led by the Knights.

Kasey Hahn and Olivia Haraldsson had assists for Lake Norman Charter, and Kaela Rasenberger made one save.

Victoria Hancock had three saves for CSD.

The Knights face Cox Mill at Lake Norman Charter on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
