HIGH SCHOOL SPRING SPORTS: Foard collects 10th consecutive softball victory

Adison Yoder had three hits and four RBIs and picked up her fifth pitching win of the season on Monday, leading visiting Fred T. Foard High past Draughn 11-2 in Northwestern Foothills 2A softball.

Foard won its 10th straight game — also getting a 5-for-5 game with a triple and an RBI from Abby Settlemyre – and is tied for first place in the conference with Bunker Hill at 5-0 in league play.

The Tigers and Bears battle, potentially for the league lead, at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Bunker Hill.

In conference games on Wednesday at 5 p.m., Patton visits Bunker Hill and East Burke goes to Fred T. Foard.

Bunker Hill 5, West Iredell 3

Kailey Travis had a leadoff home run and Payton Bryant pitched the visiting Bears past the Warriors in a Northwestern Foothills 2A game.

Bunker Hill jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and added three runs in the fourth inning en route to improving to 5-0 in the conference.

The Bears share the league lead with Fred T. Foard, and they play Patton at home on Wednesday at 5 p.m., then Foard at home at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

West Iredell, 1-5 in the league, goes to Hibriten for a conference game Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Maiden 4, Lake Norman Charter 1

Morgan Bohemier threw a complete game, allowing five hits and striking out eight, to lead the Blue Devils to a South Fork 2A home win that widened their league lead.

Jaiden Kiser went 2-for-2 with an RBI and Lashayla Thompson had two hits and scored two run for Maiden, 6-1 in the league and a game up on second-place North Lincoln (4-1 conference).

Lake Norman Charter fell to 1-6 in the conference and is in seventh place.

Maiden plays at Lincolnton on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in a conference game while Lake Norman Charter goes to West Lincoln on Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. game.

Alexander Central 27, St. Stephens 1

Julie Gast went 3-for-4 and drove in six runs, Lanie Goforth added three hit and four RBIs and Chesney Millsaps had two hits and four RBI as the Cougars rolled in three innings.

Alexander Central (10-2, 6-1 Northwestern 3A-4A) scored eight first-inning runs, seven more in the second inning and a dozen in the third inning, finishing with 19 hits.

St. Stephens, 1-7 in the league, had three hits – two by Macey Pennell and the other by Baylee Bumgarner – and made five errors.

Gast, Goforth and Millsaps hit 1-2-3 in the Cougars’ order and were a combined 8-for-15 with eight runs scored and 14 RBIs.

Millsaps (10-2) gained a pitching win while Indians starter Lauren Moser took a loss (one inning, five hits, seven of nine runs earned, four walks no strikeouts).

Bumgarner threw two innings of relief for St. Stephens, giving up 14 hits, 18 runs (12 earned) and walking one.

The Cougars, who share the conference lead with South Caldwell, go to Hickory on Wednesday at 4 p.m. for a league game, and the Indians will be at home (6 p.m.) against South Caldwell.

BASEBALL

South Caldwell 6, Hickory 2

The Spartans scored all of their runs in the first inning of a Northwestern 3A-4A victory that kept them undefeated and in first place in the conference.

Curtis Massagee had three hits and an RBI, Clay Canale had two hits and two RBIs and Tyler Wike drove in two runs for the Spartans (11-0, 7-0).

Trent Black allowed one earned runs, striking out six, to gain a win for South Caldwell. Daniel Dye pitched the final two innings, striking out four.

Hickory (6-5, 3-4) is tied for fourth place with Watauga.

Bryce Stober and Macory Mitchell each had two hits and Will Stewart drove in a run for the Red Tornadoes.

Jackson Palmer started for Hickory and worked 5 1/3 innings, and Garrett Heckler took a loss after walking four and allowing five runs in two-thirds of an inning.

South Caldwell has a Wednesday conference game at 6:30 p.m. at St. Stephens while Hickory will be a home for a 6:30 p.m. league game against Alexander Central on Wednesday.

Alexander Central 3, St. Stephens 2

The Cougars broke a 2-all tie that stood from the first inning until the seventh inning to nip the Indians and extend their win streak to seven games.

Alexander Central (10-1, 6-1) stayed within a game of first-place South Caldwell in the Northwestern 3A-4A.

Josh Jacobs had two of the Cougars’ six hits and Justin Cook, Jacob Bebber and Jeremy Hubbard each drove in a run for Alexander Central, which had six hits.

St. Stephens (3-5, 2-5) got two hits by Logan Pope and one each by Matt Walker, Josh Kidd and Owen Vansickle, and Vansickle had an RBI.

Cook gained a pitching win for the Cougars, going seven innings. He gave up five hits, two runs (both earned) with two walks and five strikeouts.

Justin Bullock went 6 1/3 innings for St. Stephens, taking a loss, and he gave up six hits, three runs (all earned) with no walks and four strikeouts.

In league play on Tuesday, it will be South Caldwell at St Stephens at 6:30 p.m. and the Cougars go to Hickory for a 6:30 p.m. game.

Bandys 16, South Iredell 9

Wiping out a seven-run deficit with eight runs in the third inning, Bandys (9-1) won a non-conference game that it added to its schedule.

The Trojans and Vikings (3-6) combined to walk 14 in the opening three innings.

Bandys led 2-0 after its first at-bat before giving up five runs in the bottom of the first inning and five in the second inning to trail 9-2.

Laz Maxwell’s three-run home run and six walks by South Iredell helped the Trojans get eight runs in the top of the third inning and a 10-9 lead.

Andrew Patrick later had a two-run home run and drove in three runs and T.J. Rasar drove in three runs for the Trojans.

Alex Reavis worked 4 1/3 shutout innings – giving up two hits, walking one and striking out six – to gain a win for Bandys.

Tafton Hensley led South Iredell with two doubles and five RBIs.

Bandys finished with 13 hits and made three errors, and the Vikings had four hits and made three errors.

The Trojans are in second place in the South Fork 2A, a half-game back of North Lincoln, and they are at home on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for a showdown game for first place.

Trojans add Fayetteville tournament

Bandys has added holiday tournament games in Fayetteville at the Fayetteville Bulldog Baseball Easter Invitational at Sanford High.

The tournament field lost a team and has another entry with player injuries, so Bandys agreed to replace Freedom Christian in the bracket after Saturday’s first round games.

The Trojans will play the loser or winner of Scotland County-Cape Fear on Monday, at 1 p.m. if it is a loser’s bracket game and at 4 p.m. if it is a tournament semifinal.

Bandys will then play a game on Tuesday, the final day of the event, at a time to be determined.

GIRLS SOCCER

Lake Norman Charter 7, Maiden 1

Ayden Yates scored three goals to lead visiting Lake Norman Charter past Maiden in a South Fork 2A match.

The Knights improved to 7-0-1 and they are atop the league standings at 4-0-0.

Kasey Hahn, Hallie Arko, Alex Behnke and Lindsay Rich each added one goal for Lake Norman Charter.

Elena Propst of Maiden took a loose ball and scored to give the Blue Devils an early lead but Maiden did not get any more shots on goal.

Lake Norman Charter had 29 shots as Yates provided her third hat trick of the season.

Yates, Madisn Sims, Hahn and Rich had assists for the Knights, who got two saves in goal by Kaela Rasenberger.

Cree Bass had three saves in goal for Maiden.

Lake Norman Charter goes to Lincolnton for a 6:30 p.m. league match on Tuesday while Maiden is at home (6:30 p.m.) for a conference match against East Lincoln.
