Alex Central, chasing 11th state title,
faces Southern Alamance on Friday at 5 p.m.

Alexander Central High’s pursuit of another state girls’ softball championships begins on Friday with an afternoon game at North Davidson High in Welcome.
The Cougars, 15-3 and the West No. 3 seed, faces East No. 4 Southern Alamance (15-3) at 5 p.m. on Friday in the opening game of a best-of-3 series for the state 3A championship.
Southern Alamance is on a nine-game win streak and Alexander Central has won five straight since a 4-0 loss to Southern Alamance in Taylorsville in a non-conference game on April 27.
Game 2 of the state title series is Saturday at 10 a.m. at North Davidson. A third game, if needed, would be played Saturday at 4 p.m.
Alexander Central has won 10 state girls’ softball titles (slo-pitch and fast-pitch).
The Cougars advanced by winning another West title on Tuesday, downing visiting North Buncombe 3-0. Their other postseason wins were 5-4 at home over No. 14 Waynesville Tuscola, 3-0 at home over No. 6 Carson and 1-0 at home over No. 15 East Rowan.
Southern Alamance’s path to the title series: 4-3 home win over No. 13 Cleveland, 5-4 home win over No. 5 Eastern Alamance, 5-1 road win over top-seeded Topsail and a 7-2 East final victory at No. 2 Gray’s Creek.
