HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER: East Lincoln nips Hickory on road to open season

HICKORY – Logan Gilley scored twice and had an assist and Chase Gilley added a goal and two assists as East Lincoln High opened the boys’ varsity soccer season on Wednesday night with a 4-2 road victory over Hickory.

Blake Swanson scored the other goal for the Mustangs (1-0) in his varsity debut.

East Lincoln went 22-4 last season, its first under head coach Billy Howell, and started 6-0. The Mustangs finished second in the South Fork 2A behind Newton-Conover.

Hickory shared the Northwestern 3A-4A title last season with Watauga and finished 15-5-4.

East Lincoln’s next match is Tuesday at South Mecklenburg at 6 p.m. while Hickory faces Hibriten on Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Hickory.
