HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Red Tornadoes deal West Caldwell shutout loss

Brayden Rowland scored twice and Nick Sadowski had a goal and two assists on Wednesday night to lead Hickory High’s boys past visiting West Caldwell 6-0 in a Northwestern 3A-4A soccer match.

Five players scored for Hickory and three had at least an assist with Alex Gonzales with two assists.

Hickory (5-6-1, 3-1-0 Northwestern 3A-4A) won for the third time in four matches and has outscored opponents 20-2 in that stretch.

The Red Tornadoes didn’t exercise their dominance over West Caldwell (3-4-2, 0-3-1) until the final 46 minutes.

Hickory didn’t get a shot on goal until there were about 26 minutes left in the opening half.

The Red Tornadoes broke a scoreless tie with 6:31 seconds left in the first half on a goal by sophomore forward Ayden Kelly.

Rowland rounded out the first-half scoring with a goal off an assist by Sadowski with 10 seconds to give Hickory a 2-0 lead at the half.

The Red Tornadoes seized control by scoring two goals within a minute of each other midway through the second half.

Rowland scored off an assist by Sadowski, and Sadowski scored off an assist by Randy Martinez with 17:18 to play for a 4-0 lead.

Isiah Bradley and Jaryd Stillwell added one goal each for Hickory.

Hickory added two insurance goals in the final 10:22 to secure the win.

Hickory outshot the Warriors 19-12 and led 9-4 on shots on goals.

The next match for the Red Tornadoes is Monday, a 6:30 p.m. start in a conference match at South Caldwell.

West Caldwell is at home for a conference match on Monday at 6 p.m. against Freedom.

Bears at home

Bunker Hill will play a makeup soccer match at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, facing South Iredell in a non-conference match that was postponed on Monday.

The Bears go on the road Monday to play Fred T. Foard at 6:30 p.m. in a Northwestern Foothills 2A match.

VOLLEYBALL

Maiden 3, Lincoln Charter 0

The Blue Devils won a non-conference match at home on Wednesday 25-11, 25-23, 25-13.

Kylie Morgan led Maiden with 13 kills and Evan Sherrill and Sarah Wicker each added five kills.

Lauren Xayavong provided two aces and four digs for the Blue Devils and Faith Herman finished with 26 assists.

Maiden, in third place in the South Fork 2A, returns to league play on Thursday at 6 p.m., visiting Bandys.

GIRLS GOLF

Mooresville wins

Mooresville won a three-team girls’ golf match on Wednesday at Brushy Mountain Golf Club.

The Blue Devils shot 142 to edge Lake Norman by four strokes and Alexander Central by 15 strokes.

Charleigh Hodges of Lake Norman was medalist with a nine-hole total of 37, and Lauren Martin had Mooresville’s best score at 38.

For Alexander Central, Haley Teague finished at 48, Jackie Little shot 51 and Jasmine Dessert had a round of 58.
