HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: N-C nips E. Lincoln, widens lead in South Fork 2A soccer

Newton-Conover High nipped visiting East Lincoln 2-1 on Monday night in boys’ soccer to open a two-game lead in the South Fork 2A.

The Red Devils are 7-0-0 at the halfway point of a 14-match league schedule, and they lead the Mustangs and Lake Norman Charter — both 5-2-0 in the conference — by two matches.

No other match details were available.

The Red Devils play at Lincolnton on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in a conference match, and the Mustangs have a home match with Lake Norman Charter on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Lake Norman Charter 5, West Lincoln 2

At West Lincoln, Riley Benz scored twice and Connor Hahn had two assists as the Knights won a South Fork 2A match.

The Knights are 5-2-0 in the league, and the Rebels fell to 2-5-0 in conference matches.

Lake Norman Charter, tied for second in the league with East Lincoln, plays the Mustangs on the road on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

West Lincoln travels to North Lincoln on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. league match.

Lincolnton 4, Maiden 2, 2 OTs

At Lincolnton, the Wolves got two goals each by Jose Garcia and Brian Sedano to improve to 3-4-0 in the South Fork 2A.

Mason Whitaker had two assists for Lincolnton and Corey Jackson made seven saves.

Maiden dropped to 4-3-0 in the league.

Lincolnton is at home Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., playing league-leading Newton-Conover, and Maiden goes to Bandys on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. conference match.

Hibriten 6, Draughn 3

At Draughn, the Panthers won a Northwestern Foothills 2A match, pulling into third place at 4-2-0 in conference matches and leaving the Wildcats at 2-5-0.

Carlos Garcia, Joe Maldanado and Christopher Kaminske each scored a goal for Draughn.

Hibriten faces East Burke in a league match on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. while Draughn goes to Fred T. Foard the same night for a 6:30 p.m. conference battle.

Hickory 3, St. Stephens 2, OT

The Red Tornadoes won on the road in overtime to hold onto first place in the Northwestern 3A-4A.

Hickory is 6-1-0 in the conference, just ahead of South Caldwell (4-1-1) and St. Stephens (4-2-1) is now tied for third with Watauga.

Hickory faces McDowell in Hickory on Wednesday at 6 p.m., and the Indians are at home at 6 p.m. to play Freedom.

South Caldwell 3, Alexander Central 0

The Spartans gained their first shutout win in Northwestern 3A-4A play by beating the Cougtars in Hudson.

The victory pushed South Caldwell, 4-1-1 in the league, into second place. The Spartans are a half-game in front of St. Stephens and Watauga, who share third place.

South Caldwell will play Watauga at home on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. in a league match while the Cougars, 3-4-0 in the conference, play West Caldwell in Taylorsville at 6 p.m.

VOLLEYBALL

Bunker Hill 3 East Burke 1

The visiting Bears won 25-18, 25-22, 18-25, 25-23 and are in third place in the Northwestern Foothills 2A at 7-4.

Erica Clontz had 19 kills, Riley Haas made six blocks, Lindsey Cales provided 19 digs and Anna Suddreth provided 27 assists for the Cavs, who are 4-6 in the conference and in fifth place.

The Bears play league-leading West Iredell in Claremont on Wednesday at 6 p.m., and the Cavs go to Hibriten for a league match at 6 p.m.

Draughn 3, Hibriten 0

At Draughn, the Wildcats won 25-12, 25-3, 25-12 to improve to 5-6 in the Northwestern Foothills 2A. They are in fourth place.

Shaedyn Housh (11 kills, 13 digs) led Draughn and Kayleigh Sigmon added 29 digs, Chloe Gray had 30 assists and Lily Xong had four aces.

Hibriten fell to 1-8 in the league.

Draughn travels to second-place Fred T. Foard on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. conference match while Hibriten is at home at 6 p.m., facing East Burke.

West Iredell 3, Patton 0

West Iredell improved to 10-0 in the league and stayed in front of idle Fred T. Foard in the race for a Northwestern Foothills 2A title.

On Wednesday, the Warriors play at Bunker Hill at 6 p.m. and Patton is idle until a Monday home match, at 6 p.m., against Bunker Hill.

GIRLS GOLF

Patriots take 1-stroke victory

Freedom’s girls won a Northwestern 3A-4A match at Brushy Mountain by one stroke, edging Hickory

Anna McDonald of Hickory was medalist in the fifth league match of the season with a nine-hole total of 38.

Albany Bock led Freedom with a round of 45.

Other top individual rounds were: McKenzie Hartman of McDowell (42), Christian Fisher of Freedom (48), Abby Gray of South Caldwell (50) and Samantha Harrington of Hickory (50).

The final league regular-season match of the year is Tuesday at Silver Creek.
