HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: McDonald-led Red Tornadoes win at Marion Lake

Hickory High’s Anna McDonald had her lowest-scoring round of the Northwestern 3A-4A season, a 33 over nine holes, to lead the Red Tornadoes to a victory Tuesday at Marion Lake.

McDonald easily won medalist, with the next best score a 40 by Albany Bock of Freedom.

Samantha Harrington shot a 41 as Hickory closed at 130, finishing ahead of Freedom (139) and Alexander Central (153).

Hailey Teague’s 47 led Alexander Central.

McDonald’s scores through four conference matches this season have been 36, 34, 37 and 33 for a 140 total, 26 strokes better than second-place Tyler Price of McDowell.

The top 10 individuals as the league heads into its next match are:

VOLLEYBALL

St. Stephens 3, McDowell 1

The Indians won in Marion in a Northwestern 3A-4A match 25-22, 25-15, 2-25, 25-10 behind Becca Kirkland (16 kills, five blocks) and Hannah McElroy (10 kills, five blocks).

Avery Jackson had 14 digs, Madi Bolch provided 11 kills and seven digs, Sydney Otterberg made 10 kills and Sam Wilson led in assists with 30 for St. Stephens.

The Indians are 6-3 in the conference, while the Titans fell to 2-7 in league matches.

St. Stephens plays at home Thursday at 6 p.m. in a conference match against West Caldwell while McDowell travels to South Caldwell, also at 6 p.m. on Thursday, in league play.

Maiden 3, West Lincoln 0

Kylie Morgan had 19 kills and six aces and Faith Herman posted 37 assists as the Blue Devils won a South Fork 2A match at home.

Maiden won 25-11, 25-7, 25-6 to improve to 7-2 in the league as Abbey Smith added eight kills and three aces.

The Blue Devils entered Tuesday’s match in third place in the league behind East Lincol and North Lincoln.

The loss left West Lincoln at 1-9 in conference play.

Maiden travels to Lake Norman Charter for a conference match at 6 p.m. on Thursday and West Lincoln is at home, also at 6 p.m. on Thursday, for a league battle with Newton-Conover.

Watauga 3, Alexander Central 1

At Watauga, the Pioneers won to remain unbeaten in the Northwestern 3A-4A and widen their lead to 1 ½ games over the second-place Cougars.

Watauga is 9-0 in the conference and Alexander Central is 7-2.

Rebekah Farthing led Watauga with 32 kills, 15 digs and three aces and Brooke Byrd provided 16 kills and 34 digs.

Grace Hayes had 18 digs and Jasime VanDyke had 13 for Watauga.

The Pioneers play next at Hickory, on Thursday at 6 p.m. in a league match, and the Cougars are at home against Freedom for a conference match, also Thursday at 6 p.m.

N-C’s Mitchell selected

MITCHELL

McKenna Mitchell, a senior at Newton-Conover, is the winner of the first PDQ Athlete of the Week award.

She’s a senior playing golf for the Red Devils for the fourth season, and she has been a captain each of those seasons and has twice made all-conference.

Mitchell has qualified for the state girls’ tournament twice and advanced to the regional tournament each of the past three seasons.

Her grade point average is 4.6667, a press release announcing her selection said.

“McKenna is a very well rounded young lady who has excelled in the classroom and in her community through her years at Newton-Conover High School,” Newton-Conover golf coach John Echerd said in the release. “She works harder than most students in the school and is a true leader … She works constantly to make sure that she is playing her best for her team.”
