Fred T. Foard High opened the volleyball season on Tuesday night with a victory over Maiden on the road in the debut of former Tigers player Meredith Lutz as head coach.
The Tigers, 20-9 last season under Alison Yount, beat the Blue Devils 25-17, 25-21, 28-26.
Maiden, 20-6 last year, got 13 kills by Abbey Smith and seven by Sarah Wicker. Abby Driscoll added five kills and two blocks, Faith Herman had 29 assists and Lauren Xayavong contributed 21 digs for the Blue Devils.
Lutz played volleyball at Foard and was a freshman on the Tigers’ 2005 team that won a state 3A title.
Foard goes to Davie County for its next match on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
Maiden has a home match against St. Stephens on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Carter Holt had two goals and two assists and Jackson Coffey and Patrick Ceccato each scored twice as the Tigers opened the season with a road victory.
Andrew Poe had a goal and an assist for Foard.
Foard plays its first home match of the season on Thursday at 6 p.m. against Hendersonville.
Maiden meets West Caldwell on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Maiden.
