HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Watauga goes unbeaten (14-0) in conference volleyball

Watauga High completed an unbeaten Northwestern 3A-4A schedule in girls’ volleyball on Thursday night, beating West Caldwell on the road to go 14-0 in the conference.

The Pioneers won 25-1, 25-11, 25-11, dropping West Caldwell to 0-14 in the conference.

Rebekah Farthing had 18 kills and five digs to lead the Pioneers, Grace Hayes added 19 assists and Emma Clark provided 11 kills.

The Pioneers lost only five games over the course of their league schedule and 11 of their conference wins were by 3-0.

Maiden 3, Lincolnton 0

The Blue Devils won 25-12, 25-15, 25-14 in a South Fork 2A home match to finish second in the conference.

Kylie Morgan, Abbey Smith and Sarah Wicker combined for 34 kills in the victory. Morgan led with 17, Smith had 10 and Wicker had seven.

Faith Herman added 39 assists and Peyton McRee provided seven aces.

Maiden faces No. 7 Newton-Conover at Maiden in the opening round of the conference tournament on Monday, and the Blue Devils will play host to the semifinal and final rounds of the tournament.

Lake Norman Charter 3, West Lincoln 0

Playing at home, the Knights got 13 kills and 16 digs from Liberty Harris and 12 digs and 20 assists from Makyla Martin to win a South Fork 2A match 25-13, 15-9, 25-23.

Hope Curtis aded 29 digs for Lake Norman Charter, which finished sixth in the league.

West Lincoln finished eighth in the conference, going 1-14.

East Lincoln 3, Newton-Conover 0

The Mustangs wrapped up the South Fork 2A title with a 25-13, 25-23, 25-18 home victory.

East Lincoln is the top seed for the conference tournament, which begins Monday at the highest seeds, and will play West Lincoln at home.

BOYS SOCCER

Lake Norman Charter 8, North Lincoln 0

Connor Hahn and Melvin Harris each scored twice for Lake Norman Charter in its South Fork 2A victory on the road.

Lake Norman Charter improved to 8-2-0 in the conference and is in second place behind Newton-Conover.

Lake Norman Charter plays at Newton-Conover on Monday at 6:30 p.m. and must win or the Red Devils will clinch at least a co-championship.

North Lincoln meets Maiden on Monday at 6 p.m. on the road.

Lincolnton 2, East Lincoln 1, OT

The Wolves won at home in a South Fork 2A match, getting goals from Ives Jenkins and Brian Sedano.

Corey Jackson and Gilo Martinez each had four saves for Lincolnton, 4-6-0 in the league.

East Lincoln fell to 6-4-0 and is in third place.

Lincolnton plays at home Monday at 6 p.m., facing West Lincoln in a league match.

The Mustangs travel to Bandys on Monday for a 6:30 p.m. conference match.

JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL

Alexander Central 12, McDowell 7

The Cougars scored twice over the final nine minutes – including with 42 seconds to play – to nip the Titans in a Northwestern 3A-4A game and stay tied for first place.

McDowell (2-5, 1-2) took a 7-0 lead with 2:28 left in the third quarter on a 16-yard TD pass from Richard Handy to Trent Lewis and Seth Baird’s PAT.

Alexander Central (6-0, 4-0) pulled within 7-6 with 8:48 to play on a 4-yard run by Colston Yount.

The Cougars’ Bryson Abernathy caught a 15-yard TD pass from Lance Justice with 42 seconds to play.

Dayente Calhoun ran 21 times for 108 yards to lead Alexander Central and Morgan added 11 carries for 61 yards.

Quantavian Moore led McDowell, which had 73 rushing yards, with 67 yards.

Kris Payne, Zach Wooten and JaiKwan Tilley each had six tackles to lead the Alexander Central defense. Tilley also had a sack.

For McDowell, Kurtis Padgett had nine tackles, Riley Moore had six and Ahmad Washington added six.

Alexander Central shares first place with South Caldwell and plays next Thursday night at St. Stephens. The Cougars and Spartans won’t meet until a regular-season finale on Nov. 2 in Taylorsville.

McDowell is at home next Thursday to face Watauga in a league game.

Hickory 34, West Caldwell 32, OT

Lamond Huitt’s rushing touchdown in overtime lifted Hickory to a Northwestern 3A-4A victory in Lenoir and its first win of the season.

The Red Tornadoes (107, 1-3) led 20-14 through one quarter before the Warriors (0-6, 0-4) threw a 60-yard TD pass to tie it at 20 with three minutes to go in the third quarter.

Each team had a rushing TD in the fourth quarter with Hickory’s tying the game again, at 26-all, to force overtime.

West Caldwell scored on its first OT possession to lead 32-26 before Huitt scored, and the Red Tornadoes converted a two-point conversion to win.

Next Thursday, Hickory meets South Caldwell in Hickory in a league game while West Caldwell travels to Freedom for a conference battle.
