SOUTHERN PINES – Maiden High’s girls golf team is in seventh place — 39 strokes off the lead – after one round of the state 1A/2A championship tournament at Longleaf Golf and Country Club.
Led by Kayla Lang’s 16-over par 88, the Blue Devils are at 312, a stroke back of sixth-place Ledford and five strokes behind fifth-place Highland Tech. She is tied for 15th with three other golfers.
Currituck County is the team leader at 57-over par 273, 10 strokes ahead of Mount Airy.
Katherine Schuster of First Flight tops the leaderboard after a 2-under par 70. She is five strokes ahead of Bailee Twiford of Currituck County.
Camyrn Lamp of Newton-Conover is tied for 22nd after an opening round of 21-over par 93.
Maiden’s other scores were a 110 by Alex Grant and a 114 by Sara Howard.
The tournament’s final day is Tuesday.
