HIGH SCHOOL GOLF: Indians’ Powell wins title, Foard’s Catawba County team champ

CONOVER – Caden Powell of St. Stephens High won the individual title in a playoff, and Fred T. Foard High won a team title on Tuesday in the Catawba County Championships at Rock Barn Country Club and Spa.

Powell birdied the first playoff hole (No, 10) while Newton-Conover’s Holt Allison made par to close out a nine-hole event played by nine schools.

Foard shot 169, led by a Max Cranford’s 38, to finish two strokes ahead of University Christian and three strokes in front of Hickory.

Connor Matthews’ 41 as the best score for University Christian while Jackson Graham shot 39 to lead Hickory.

Team scores: 1. Fred T. Foard 169; 2. University Christian 171; 3. Hickory 172; 4. Maiden 178; 5. St. Stephens, Newton-Conover 180; 7. Hickory Christian 204; 8. Tabernacle Christian 225; 9. Bandys 228; no team score by Bunker Hill.

Top 10 individuals: 1. Caden Powell (SS), Holt Allison (N-C) 36; 3. Max Cranford (FTF), Sam robinson (HCA) 38; 5. Jackson Graham (H) 39; 6. Luke Campbell (B) 40; 7. Paul Karre (N-C), Eli Wyatt (H), Kenan Lawing (M), Connor Matthews (UC) 41.
