Maiden High, this season’s varsity football champion in the South Fork 2A, leads the all-conference team with nine picks and also has the top offensive player and coach in the league.
In voting by conference head coaches, the Blue Devils had nine of the 44 players selected All-South Fork 2A and produced the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year in quarterback Keygan Mayfield.
The league head coaches also selected Maiden head coach Will Byrne — who in his second season guided the Blue Devils to an unbeaten conference (7-0) and regular-season record (11-0) – as the Coach of the Year.
The conference’s other two awards – Defensive Player of the Year and Specialist of the Year – went to Ryan Matz of East Lincoln and Bandys’ Ja’Tay Culliver of Bandys, respectively.
Six of the league’s eight teams earned state playoff berths this season – Maiden, Newton-Conover, East Lincoln, Lincolnton, Bandys and West Lincoln – but only Lincolnton reached the second round.
Second-place Newton-Conover ended up with eight All-South Fork 2A picks, third-place East Lincoln had seven, fourth-place Lincolnton had six and fifth-place Bandys had five.
