HS FOOTBALL: Since 2000, Trojans’ Elliott only QB to lead Catawba County’s passing 3 straight seasons

Jake McRee, quarterback at Maiden High in 2013, has the best passing season in Catawba County prep football from 2000 through last season, throwing for 2,887 yards and 40 touchdowns. The county’s top passer in 13 of the last 18 seasons has played for either Bandys (7) or Maiden (6).

In the previous 18 high school football seasons, only one player led Catawba County in passing yardage in three consecutive seasons – Bandys High quarterback Zach Elliott in 2001-2003.

The county leader in seven of those seasons played for Bandys, Maiden had the leader in six seasons, Hickory had the top passer in three seasons and Newton-Conover had the most prolific passer in two seasons.

Three quarterbacks other than Elliott led the county in passing in back-to-back seasons – Kyle Houser of Bandys, Kyle Johnson of Hickory and Cameron Stanley of Newton-Conover.

The top county passer for 10 consecutive seasons, starting in 2000, played for Bandys or Maiden and in a stretch of 14 seasons – also starting in 2000 – the leading passer was from Bandys or Maiden in 12 of those years.

The top single-season passing yardage in those 18 seasons is 2,887 by Jake McRee of 2013, and he threw the most touchdown passes in a season in that year as well (40).
