Alex Central has 2 rushers clear 100 yards in win over Watauga

Hickory High scored all the points after halftime on Thursday night, rolling past visiting Freedom 34-2 in a Northwestern 3A-4A junior varsity football game.

Freedom (0-1) gained its early lead when Hickory’s punter fielded a snap in the end zone and his knee touched.

After that, it was all Red Tornadoes (2-0). They tied it at 2 on a safety by defensive end Henry Pitts.

Hickory then drove 42 yards and scored on a pass from Turner Wood to Jake Horyza, adding a conversion run by Wood for a 10-2 edge.

The Red Tornadoes then had possession at the Freedom 25 after a bad snap on a punt by the Patriots. Wood threw 7 yards to TayshawnWright and Iziach Harris ran for a two-point conversion.

Hickory’s Tristan Williams recovered a fumble at the Freedom 10 to set up the next score, a 7-yard run by Williams. The Red Tornadoes led 26-2 after Wood threw a conversion pass to Zane Krenzel.

The final Hickory score came on a 23-yard pass from Wood to Noah Surbaugh with Melvin Dula adding a conversion run.

The Red Tornadoes, who beat R-S Central 26-6 in their season-opening game, play Thursday at 7 p.m. at Watauga.

Freedom is at home Thursday at 7 p.m., facing Alexander Central.

Bunker Hill 20, Fred T. Foard 8

Redek Robinson completed 10 of 14 passes for 79 yards and a TD and ran for another score, helping the visiting Bears win a Northwestern Foothills 2A game.

Robinson hit Xavier McCleave for a 30-yard score and Robinson and Talayn Weaver had second-half scoring runs for Bunker Hill (1-1).

Weaver led the Bears’ rushers with seven carries for 77 yards and Kaden Bolick added 49 yards on 10 carries.

Foard’s next game is Thursday at 7 p.m. at Hibriten while Bunker Hill’s next game is March 18 at East Burke.

Three teams in the league – Draughn, Patton and West Iredell – are not fielding JV teams this season.

Alexander Central 30, Watauga 6

Luke Hammer and Logan Shoemaker combined for 247 rushing yards and three TDs as the Cougars (1-0) won a Northwestern 3A-4A game at home.

Hammer ran seven times for 127 yards and for TDs of 1 and 90 yards and Shoemaker had 14 carries for 100 yards and scored on a 5-yard run that put Alexander Central ahead 30-0 early in the fourth quarter.

Hammer ran for a conversion after his first scoring run, with six minutes, 20 seconds left in the first half.

Riley Fortner caught a conversion pass from Tanner Moore and Shoemaker had a conversion run after Kenji Vang’s 3-yard TD run with 3:26 to play.

Alexander Central had 348 yards on offense (335 rushing) and held the Pioneers (0-2) to 65 yards rushing on 22 carries and 130 yards of offense.

Cameron Grant had five tackles for the Cougars and Hammer, Devin McCall and Giovanni White each had four. Two of McCall’s hits were for lost yardage.

For Watauga, Jackson Pryor had six tackles.

Alexander Central will play at Freedom on Thursday at 7 p.m., and Watauga is at home Thursday at 7 p.m. against Hickory.

West Lincoln 40, Maiden 26

The Rebels (1-1) had three straight scores that broke a 20-all tie en route to a home victory in a South Fork 2A game.

Caron McDaniel scored on a 9-yard run and Jalen Robinson returned a kickoff 79 yards for Maiden (0-2). That tied it at 13.

A 20-20 tie was generated by Bryson Foard’s 38-yard TD pass to Caden Brantley.

West Lincoln then scored three unanswered TDs for a 40-20 lead before McDaniel ran 9 yards for the Blue Devils’ last score.

Foard finished 9 for 11 for 134 yards passing for Maiden with Brantley making four catches for 78 yards, McDaniel rushing 15 times for 78 yards and Robinson posting three catches for 30 yards.

West Lincoln faces Newton-Conover on the road Thursday at 7 p.m., while Maiden is at home against Lake Norman Charter, also Thursday at 7 p.m.

Lincolnton 31, East Lincoln 20

The Wolves (1-1) led 12-8 at the half and scored 19 points in the third quarter en route to a South Fork 2A victory on the road.

East Lincoln (1-1) scored the game’s final 12 points.

Lincolnton will be at home Thursday at 7 p.m. against Bandys and the Mustangs are at North Lincoln on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Newton-Conover 14, Bandys 6

The Red Devils (2-0) protected a slim lead late in the game at Bandys after the Trojans drove to the Trojans’ 10 with about seven minutes to play.

Newton-Conover took a knee at the Bandys 1 after a long pass and won a South Fork 2A game.

Bandys, a 22-20 winner over Maiden to open the season, fell to 1-1.

Newton-Conover faces West Lincoln in Newton on Thursday at 7 p.m., and Bandys goes to Lincolnton on Thursday (7 p.m.).

Hibriten 57, West Caldwell 0

The Panthers (2-0) had seven rushing scores as they rolled past the host Warriors (0-2) in a Northwestern Foothills 2A game.

Hibriten scored 22 points in the final quarter.

The Panthers will be at home Thursday at 7 p.m. against Fred T. Foard.

The Warriors’ next game is March 18 at home against Fred T. Foard.

North Lincoln 14, Lake Norman Charter 0

North Lincoln (2-0) won a South Fork 2A game on the road with a score in the second and fourth quarters.

Lake Norman Charter, which is not fielding a varsity team this season, fell to 1-1.

North Lincoln is at home Thursday at 7 p.m., facing East Lincoln, and Lake Norman Charter goes to Maiden on Thursday at 7 p.m.

McDowell 36, Polk County 6

The Titans (1-0) won their non-league game at home.

McDowell did not play its first scheduled game, at home against Hickory, because its team was under quarantine.

The Titans have a home game on Thursday at 7 p.m. against South Caldwell.
