West Iredell High scored 26 points in the third quarter on Friday night en route to beating the visiting Hickory Hawks 32-6 in the first game of the season for both teams.

Keenan Bunch had a 12-yard rushing touchdown to open the scoring for the Warriors, and Bernie Briley — who played last season at Bunker Hill — scored his first West Iredell TD on a 65-yard run to put the Warriors ahead for good.

Briley’s score came after Maureece Norris scored the Hawks’ only TD on a 6-yard run.

West Iredell plays at home on Friday night at 7:30 p.m., facing South Iredell.

The Hawks’ next game is at St. Joseph’s Catholic School.

R-S Central 20, McDowell 14: An interception by Bryson Flynn in the final three minutes sealed a home victory for the Hilltoppers. It came on a third-and-goal play.

R-S Central quarterback Jayden Waddell ran for nearly 140 yards and had 257 of the Hilltoppers’ 385 yards in the victory.

Waddell scored a go-ahead TD after the Titans had an error in their punting game.

Adam Randolph ran for 135 yards for McDowell.

The Titans play their first game on their new artificial turf field on Friday at 7:30 p.m. against Avery County.

Southlake Christian 26, Lake Norman Charter 8: Lake Norman Charter got an early safety to lead 2-0 but it’s only other TD was by passing in a season-opening game at Lake Norman Charter.

A 50-yard TD pass got Southlake Christian its first lead, 7-2, and two defensive TDs pushed the lead to 26-8 after the Knights had scored to make it 13-8.

Lake Norman Charter will play at Pine Lake Prep on Friday night.
