HICKORY – When the combined points had climbed to 70 or beyond when Fred T. Foard High battled St. Stephens in football, the outcomes weren’t what the Tigers wanted.
Foard corrected that on Friday night — getting 18 rushes for 189 yards and one touchdown from Tate Beaver and four TDs and 93 yards from Corey Siemer — to down the host Indians 55-34.
The Tigers’ fourth straight win – they are 4-1 – is their first over St. Stephens (since 1980) when the two teams have combined for 70 or more points (see graphic).
Foard led Friday’s game 21-10 at the half and then raced away from the Indians (1-3) with a 21-point third quarter.
After St. Stephens closed with 21-13 on a 34-yard field goal by Bryce DeSantis, the Tigers opened their lead to 22 points via a 1-yard TD run by Siemer and a 28-yard TD pass from quarterback Jack Colosimo to Gavin Shoemaker.
Xavian King, who led St. Stephens with 125 rushing yards on 14 carries, ran 10 yards for a TD before Siemer’s 10-yard TD run just before the end of the third quarter made it 42-20 Tigers.
Beaver went 37 yards early in the fourth quarter for Foard, widening the lead to 48-20, and the Tigers’ final TD came on Andrew Bishop’s 4-yard return of a blocked punt.
King closed the gap to 21 points with a 5-yard TD run in the final 40 seconds.
With his big night against the Indians, Beaver positioned himself to approach 500 yards rushing in his next game. Unofficially, he will need 40 yards when the Tigers open their Northwestern Foothills 2A schedule at Patton next Friday at 7:30 p.m.
St. Stephens starts its Northwestern 3A-4A schedule next Friday at 7:30 p.m. by playing Freedom on the road.
