VALDESE – Matt Byrd’s two touchdown runs sparked Patton High on Friday night as it again beat Draughn in football.

The visiting Panthers overcame not having their leading rusher, William Brawley, to win 14-3 for their fourth straight win over the Wildcats and sixth in eight all-time meetings.

Brawley, who last week became the Greater Hickory area’s first 1,000-yard rusher this season, was sidelined with a foot injury.

Byrd scored on TD runs of 9 yards and 80 yards, helping Patton (5-2, 2-0) share the early lead in the Northwestern Foothills 2A with West Iredell.

Traevon Lytle led the Panthers’ running game with more than 90 yards and quarterback Ty Causby had 70 yards.

The Wildcats (1-6, 0-2) were also without their leading rusher, Christian Campbell, after he was injured and exited on Draughn’s first possession.

Caleb Bias ran for nearly 75 yards for Draughn.

The Panthers go for career win No. 145 for head coach Tom Eanes next Friday when they play East Burke at Patton at 7:30 p.m. in a league game.

Draughn goes to winless Bunker Hill next Friday for a 7:30 p.m. conference game.
