HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Briley-led West Iredell hands Cavs league loss

ICARD – West Iredell High, with Bernie Briley scoring on two of his four carries, tripped East Burke 26-14 on Friday night in a Northwestern Foothills 2A football game in Icard.

The Warriors (4-3, 2-0) grabbed a share of the early conference lead with Patton behind Briley’s four carries for 71 yards and nearly 230 yards of total offense from quarterback Dillan Davis.

There was only one score in the opening half at East Burke, a TD run by Emmanuel Long, and the Warriors were up 6-0 at halftime.

Davis threw a TD pass to Ryan Tenor in the third quarter to extend that lead to 13-0, and it was up to 19-0 after Briley, who played last season at Bunker Hill, ran 28 yards for a TD.

East Burke then got a TD run by Josh Moore and a two-point conversion run by Grant Fulbright to close within 19-8.

Briley broke a run 53 yards for a TD to push West Iredell’s lead to 26-8.

The Cavs (1-5. 0-1) had the game’s final score, a pass from Seth Pruitt to Ayden Lail.

West Iredell outgained East Burke by about 170 yards with Davis throwing for 152 and running for 71.

Fulbright, who came into the game with 350 rushing yards, was injured in the fourth quarter and left the game.

West Iredell survived more than 100 yards in penalties to win its first meeting with East Burke.

The Warriors have a bye next Friday and will have two weeks to prepare to play Patton at West Iredell on Oct. 13.

East Burke faces Patton on the road next Friday at 7:30 p.m. in a conference battle.
