Red Devils, Mountaineers tie: From reports by The Shelby Daily Star (www.shelbystar.com) at the Cleveland County Jamboree on Kings Mountain: Kings Mountain and Newton-Conover battled to a 7-all tie in one half of play.

Newton-Conover ate up a big chunk of the clock in the first quarter and overcame an early holding penalty to score on its first possession and lead Kings Mountain 7-0 with three minutes, 20 seconds left in the first quarter.

Red Devils quarterback Shamar Baker used his scrambling ability to keep drives alive – his biggest run coming on a 35-yard scramble to the Kings Mountain 23.

Newton-Conover eventually scored when Baker lofted a pass over the Kings Mountain defense to receiver Jaheim Mullen.

The Mountaineers punted on their first possession from midfield despite promising runs from running back Ricaylen Mack. Kings Mountain’s second drive was still in progress when the second quarter began.

Kings Mountain methodically made its way down the field – picking up small chunks – and was aided by a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty from the Red Devils.

Qua Brooks ended the 80-yard drive with a short run for a 7-all tie.

A 41-yard pass from Baker to James Woods for Newton-Conover was all for naught after Kings Mountain’s Reese Reinhardt intercepted Baker to end the Red Devils’ second possession.

Following the pick, the Mountaineers changed up their offense and went to a power-run, quick-snap offense with effective results. Mack plowed between the tackles and quarterback Kaylon Wade took advantage on some sneaks.

But the drive ended with a punt due to a touchdown to Mack being called back as a result of an illegal shift penalty, followed by a sack of Wade on the next play.

“Both teams I think are pretty good,” Kings Mountain head coach Greg Lloyd said. “I think it was good competition for both sides.

“We had a mistake there that cost us a touchdown that might have got us a win, but all in all, it was good to get out here and play in a game situation.

“We have a good football team, we just have to keep getting better.”

Other scores from the Jamboree: Crest 23, West Forsythg 14; A.C. Reynolds 6, Burns 0; Shelby 48, Concord Robinson 20.

Late pass big for West Caldwell: At the CarolinaPreps.com event at Mooresville, Kaleb Dula threw a late TD pass to Shawn Hendrix as West Caldwell nipped North Rowan 14-13.

The Warriors, under new head coach Devore Holman, open the season on Friday at East Burke.

Holman was previously head coach at Davie County, and his debut comes against a former West Caldwell head coach – Marc Buffamoyer debuts as East Burke’s head coach on Friday as well, replacing retired head coach Tom Brown.

Bears add JV game: Bunker Hill has announced it is adding a junior varsity football game to its schedule.

The Bears will be at home on Thursday to open the JV season at 6:30 p.m. against North Lincoln.

Prior to the change, Bunker Hill was set to open its JV schedule on Aug. 24 with a game at St. Stephens.

The additional game for North Lincoln means the Knights won’t have to wait, as originally planned, to play their first JV game on Sept. 7 (home versus Alexander Central).

HobbsDailyReport.com is working on finalizing JV schedules and will post them this coming week, as the season’s opening games are Thursday night.

In a change, many schools are now going to start JV games at 6:30 p.m.
