HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Mauney sparks E. Rutherford’s win over Spartans

FOREST CITY – Demetrius Mauney had 192 rushing yards and three touchdown runs by halftime on Wednesday night, leading East Rutherford High past visiting South Caldwell 47-7 in a non-conference football game.

Mauney scored on runs of 21, 15 and 88 yards to open the scoring for the Cavs (3-0), who have outscored opponents 129-23 to start the season.

East Rutherford led 26-0 at the half in a game moved from Friday night to Wednesday because of a forecast for heavy rains.

Julian Whiteside returned an interception 20 yards for a TD to give the Cavs their halftime lead.

East Rutherford went up 47-0, generating a running clock for the remainder of the game by North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) rules, with one minute, three seconds left in the third quarter.

The only score for South Caldwell (0-2) was a TD by Harvey Sullivan with 7:19 to play.

South Caldwell was playing in Rutherford County for the first time since beating R-S Central on the road in 2011.

The Spartans’ continue their first season under head coach Marc Kirkpatrick next Friday when they chase his first career with in a game at Caldwell County rival Hibriten.
