HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Calhoun sparks Alex Central; N-C wins JV football opener

Dayente Calhoun took three of his 11 carries for touchdowns on Wednesday night to lead Alexander Central High to a 48-16 home victory over North Iredell in junior varsity football.

Calhoun ran for 126 yards and the Cougars gained 342 on the ground in a game moved up one day because of a forecast for bad weather.

The Cougars (2-0) outgained the Red Raiders 418-168 in the JV victory as Lance Justice added four carries for 86 yards and a TD and Daniel Morgan had five carries for 76 yards for Alexander Central.

Calhoun opened the game’s scoring with seven minutes, 28 seconds left in the first quarter with a 52-yard TD run. His other TD runs, of 1 and 11 yards came in the closing 11 seconds of the third quarter and with 4:10 to play.

The game was tied at 8 with 6:52 to go in the opening quarter, with the Cougars gaining the lead for good with a safety and then adding a 10-yard TD run by Easton Rhoney for an 18-8 edge after Colston Yount ran for a two-point conversion.

Justice threw 34 yards to Bryson Abernathy and Rhoney threw a two-point conversion pass to Will Elder for a 28-6 lead with 8:51 left in the first half.

Alexander Central led 34-16 at the half after Calhoun’s second rushing TD.

Davis Brown led North Iredell with 17 carries for 78 yards and the Red Raiders’ only rushing score. They had a 65-yard TD pass from Lucas Coombes to Cody Nicholson in the second quarter.

JaiKwaun Tilley led the Cougars defensively with 10 tackles and Morgan added seven. Hunter Bolden’s six tackles was a team-best for North Iredell.

Alexander Central meets North Lincoln on the road next Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Newton-Conover 26, Hickory 12

At Newton-Conover, the Red Devils won their JV opener over the Red Tornadoes in a game moved up by one day.

No other game details were available.

The Red Devils are at home next Thursday to play East Burke while the Red Tornadoes (0-2) are idle until playing Bandys at HHS on Sept. 14.

Maiden 16, Bunker Hill 6

The Blue Devils improved to 3-0 with a home victory over the Bears (1-1).

No other game details were available.

Maiden has outscored opponents 52-14 this season and has two open dates before its South Fork 2A opener on Sept. 21 at Bandys.

West Lincoln 48, Cherryville 7

At Cherryville, the Rebels rolled in their season-opening game.

No other game details were available.

West Lincoln is at home next Thursday night to face Fred T. Foard.

Freedom 50, East Burke 6

The Patriots (2-0) cruised in Icard and have outscored their first two opponents 98-6.

No other game details were available.

Freedom goes to a 3-0 start next Thursday when Patton visits while the Cavs will play next Thursday night at Newton-Conover.

VOLLEYBALL

West Iredell 3, East Burke 0

At West Iredell, the Warriors won a Northwestern Foothills 2A match 25-19, 25-10, 25-10.

Pressley Kiser had six kills and Anna Suddreth and Graleigh Hildebran each contributed six assists for East Burke.

West Iredell plays at Statesville on Thursday at 6 p.m., and the Cavs meet Patton in Icard on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Maiden 3, South Iredell 0

At Maiden, Kylie Morgan had 21 kills and Faith Herman provided 35 assists as the Blue Devils won a non-conference match 25-20, 26-24, 25-17.

Evan Sherrill added nine kills for Maiden, which has a South Fork 2A match at West Lincoln on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Draughn 3, Patton 0

At Patton, the Panthers won 25-21, 25-10, 25-14 in a non-league match.

Ella Gragg led Patton in the loss with seven kills and eight digs, Marissa Totty had five aces, seven digs and seven assists and Aleia Rose made nine digs.

Draughn plays Thursday at 6 p.m. at R-S Central while Patton next plays on Tuesday at East Burke (5:30 p.m.).

West Lincoln 3, Cherryville 0

At West Lincoln, the Rebels won 25-23, 25-14, 25-2 in a non-conference match.

Camryn Bess had seven kills and three blocks for Cherryville with Allison Raines making 10 digs and Brandy Weaver posting seven assists.

Alexander Central 3, West Caldwell 0 (late Tuesday)

The Cougars opened Northwestern 3A-4A play with a 25-7, 25-13, 25-8 victory on the road.

Alexander Central had 15 aces, led by Ashlee Falls and Chesney Millsaps with four each, in the victory.

Millsaps had eight kills and four blocks and Sage Harrington added eight kills for the Cougars. Kacey Payne and Valorie Wheeler combined for 28 assists.

Alexander Central’s junior varsity won 2-0 behind five aces by Kinsey Elder and three by Rachel Hager.

The Cougars have a home league match on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against Watauga.

BOYS SOCCER

West Henderson 4, Patton 2

Alex Kennedy scored twice as the Falcons, playing at home, handed the Panthers their first loss of the season.

Patton plays Chase on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Catawba River Soccer Complex.

Draughn 5, R-S Central 2

The Wildcats won a non-league match at home, holding off the Hilltoppers after they got a goal each from Zach Schofield and Jose Chavez.

Draughn faces Freedom at the Catawba River Soccer Complex on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Statesville 6, Lake Norman Charter 3

Toni Pineda had three goals and two assists, sparking the Greyhounds’ home non-conference victory over the Knights.

Lake Norman Charter next plays at Central Academy at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
