LINCOLNTON – Maiden High ran its football win streak over West Lincoln to 20 games on Friday night with a 27-13 victory that featured running back Kentrell Williams’ fourth straight game with at least 100 yards rushing.
Williams ran for 107 yards on 12 carries and scored twice, and quarterback Keygan Mayfield threw for 146 yards and had 197 in total offense as Maiden (6-0, 2-0) remained atop the South Fork 2A standings.
With the win, Maiden has won at least six games in 20 of the last 21 seasons (they were 5-7 in 2014) and for the 55th time in 65 seasons (see graphic).
The Blue Devils, who have won 14 of their 18 games under second-year head coach Will Byrne, share the conference lead with Newton-Conover and East Lincoln.
West Lincoln, outgained by only seven yards by Maiden, fell to 3-3, 1-1.
The Rebels had an early lead after a TD run, but Mayfield hit Logan Hentschel for a 13-yard TD pass and a PAT tied it at 7.
Williams’ first scoring run of 18 yards put the Blue Devils up 13-7 in the third quarter before Mayfield’s 26-yard TD run extended the lead to 20-7.
When Williams broke a run for 54 yards – his fifth rushing TD of more than 49 yards in the last three games – Maiden led 27-7.
Hentschel caught three passes for 54 yards and Caleb McDaniel had six catches for 83 yards for Maiden.
Mayfield unofficially has 784 yards passing this season.
The teams combined for six turnovers – three each – but Maiden prevailed to also win for the 10th straight time at West Lincoln.
The Rebels haven’t beaten Maiden since 1985.
Maiden will be at home next Friday at 7:30 p.m. to face Lake Norman Charter in a league game while the Rebels travel to play Newton-Conover at 7:30 p.m.
