THURSDAY’S GAME HIGHLIGHTS

ST. STEPHENS 14, BUNKER HILL 14

The Indians and Bears battled to a tie in a non-conference game in Hickory with the Bears scoring their points on returns.

Elijah Israel had an 83-yard kickoff return and a 78-yard punt return for another score to lead Bunker Hill (0-1-1).

Preston Workman ran for a two-point conversion after Israel broke the opening kickoff for a TD and that left the Bears up 8-0.

Israel had eight carries for 27 rushing yards and Workman gained 27 on four carries.

Sophomore running back Tony Rangel had both TDs for the Indians (0-1) – on runs – and the Indians’ defense tackled the punter in the end zone for a safety.

Peyton Young and Chance Wilson, both freshmen, combined to go 7-for-12 passing for St. Stephens while freshman tight end Noah Gsheidmeier and freshman fullback Andrew Kehoe each had 27 receiving yards.

Wilson, playing safety, led the Indians on defense with four tackles and one assist. Rangel added four tackles and Gsheidmeier had four tackles and one assist.

Bunker Hill is idle until a Sept. 12 home game against Bandys while St. Stephens’ next game is Sept. 12 at home against Maiden.

ALEXANDER CENTRAL 28, WILKES CENTRAL 16

Cam Lackey ran for 82 yards and a TD and Harrison Brashear had two scoring runs and 78 rushing yards as the Cougars (2-0) won at home.

Lackey opened the scoring with a 5-yard TD run with three minutes, 47 seconds left in the first qurter and Brasher threw a two-point conversion pass to Josh Stubbs.

After the Eagles scored on an 88-yard pass from C.J. McGill to Carlos Reyes, the Cougars took control.

Six minutes after the long TD throw, Brashear scored on a 10-yard run.

When Brashear broke a 33-yard for a TD and Caleb Williams added a two-point conversion run, Alexander Central was up 22-8.

Luke Mitchell’s 25-yard TD run boosted the lead to 28-8 with 4:47 to go, and Wilkes Central scored on a 4-yard McGill to A.J. Villapando pass and McGill ran for two to make it 28-16.

Wilkes Central had just 36 rushing yards on 16 carries, and the Cougars ran 38 times for 311 yards.

McGill went 8 of 13 for 154 yards passing for the Eagles.

Mitchell led the Cougars with four tackles and Dalton Beck, Zhaheim Millsaps and Thomas Cline each added three tackles. Millsaps had 1 ½ hits for lost yardage.

Jake Perry had a game-best eight tackles for Wilkes Central and Macklyn Harper had six.

Alexander Central does not play again until Sept. 12 when it goes to South Iredell.

FREEDOM WINS BY FORFEIT

Host Freedom (1-0) claimed a forfeit victory over Burke County rival Draughn.

Draughn is scheduled to play nine additional games this season, starting with a Northwestern Foothills 2A game on Thursday at home against Fred T. Foard (6:30 p.m.).

Freedom goes to East Burke on Thursday for a 7 p.m. game.
