LENOIR – Hibriten High scored twice in a three-minute span early in the game on Friday night en route to routing visiting South Caldwell 48-0 to improve to 4-0 this season.
The Panthers opened the scoring with a 65-yard run by Marqwone Jones five minutes into the game.
Miles Simon’s 38-yard TD run came about three minutes later and, after a fumble recovery, Simon scored on an 11-yard run for a 21-0 lead for Hibriten.
McKinley Witherspoon’s 38-yard TD run pushed the lead to 28-0 about three minutes before the half.
A defensive score by Noah Haney spread the margin to 35 points before Witherspoon pushed it to 42-0 with 11 minutes to go on a 35-yard scoring run.
The game was the 41st since the 1980 season between the Caldwell County rivals, and the Spartans (0-3) have a 21-19-1 edge in those games.
Hibriten won for the second straight season and has outscored South Caldwell 109-0 in those two games.
The Panthers have outscored opponents 178-13 in their 4-0 start.
South Caldwell is still chasing the first career win for their former quarterback, Marc Kirpatrick. They play their final non-league game of the season on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at R-S Central.
The Panthers have a much anticipated matchup with Newton-Conover, also unbeaten after hammering East Burke 44-6 on the road on Friday night, next. The Red Devils visit Hibriten on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
Hibriten will play its first Northwestern Foothills 2A game on Sept. 22, playing Bunker Hill in Claremont.
