HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Former N-C player named offensive coordinator at Spartanburg, S.C.

Jason McManus, a former Newton-Conover High athlete, is making a move to Spartanburg (S.C.), accepting the position of offensive coordinator.

McManus has been offensive coordinator at state power South Pointe (S.C.), and on Wednesday accepted the same position at Spartanburg.

He is a 1996 graduate of Newton-Conover, where he played football and baseball before playing college football at Gardner-Webb University as punter.

McManus played varsity football for the Red Devils in 1994 (9-3) and 1995 (12-1) under head coach Don Patrick.

As a junior, McManus kicked 36 extra points and his punting average was 31.9 yards. He followed that with 32 PATs as a senior, a punting average of 33.4 yards and kicked three field goals – 39 yards against Bessemer City, 42 yards against St. Stephens and 31 yards against Maiden.
