HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Draughn’s win extends Bunker Hill losing streak to 10

CLAREMONT – Draughn High had three big scoring plays — one a kickoff return — to defeat Bunker Hill 20-13 on Friday night and hand the Bears their 10th straight loss.

Facing Bunker Hill for the first time since 2012, the visiting Wildcats (2-6, 1-2 Northwestern Foothills 2A) picked up a win over the Bears for the fourth time in their five battles.

Jesse Gullet returned a kickoff that began the second half 70 yards for a TD to spark Draughn.

Two possessions after that, Christian Campbell threw a pass to Hunter Jensen for a 42-yard score to push the Wildcats’ lead to 14 points.

Draughn’s first-half TD came on a 63-yard run by Tyler McKinney, who finished just shy of 120 rushing yards in the win.

The Wildcats snapped a two-game losing streak to gain their first win in their new conference.

Bunker Hill fell to 0-8, 0-2 and has won once, over Bandys last season, in its last 19 games.

The Bears’ losing streak includes losses to Newton-Conover and West Caldwell to close last season plus eight straight this season.

Draughn picked up its 27th victory under head coach Scott Lambert, who is in his second tenure as Wildcats head coach.

The Wildcats are at home next Friday to face unbeaten Hibriten at 7:30 p.m. in a Northwestern Foothills 2A game.

Bunker Hill is on the road next Friday night, facing East Burke at 7:30 p.m. in Icard, in a conference game.
